Tehran became a prosperous market town during the 13th century, and started getting noticed more around the 15th century. Tehran became the capital of Iran in 1786. Since then, Tehran's population tripled, and reached a population of 50,000 in less than a decade. During the late 19th century Tehran underwent a major program of modernization, which enlarged the urban area. Since then, Iran underwent two revolutions, the Constitutional revolution in 1906, and the Iranian revolution in 1978. The end of outright warfare Iran had with Iraq in 1988 triggered the start of a normalization process in Tehran.
